According to the U.S. Wall Ball Association, beach-goers in the 1930s passed time by hitting a bald tennis ball against the sides of wooden jetties, inspiring the New York Parks Department to place community handball courts in city parks. Today, the game of wall ball is a professional sport played at athletic centers across the country. Dmitry Druzhinsky, co-founder of MatchPoint NYC, a premier Brooklyn-based health and fitness complex, was recently accompanied by politicians for the annual Pro Wall Ball Tournament. This large competition – billed as the “Battle of the Boroughs,” – raises awareness of public health and youth empowerment in the area, with the winning team awarded a trophy and bragging rights.
Dmitry Druzhinsky grew a passion for property development back in 2000, when he spearheaded the construction of his house. He has since been responsible for the development and sale of over one hundred pieces of property. As co-founder of MatchPoint NYC, his experience in the acquisition and rezoning of land was instrumental to the completion of this great $20 million facility. The negotiation process with New York City’s Board of Standards and Appeals was arduous: to gain permission to develop the highly sought after three acre lot, the businessman worked with the city to “de-map” a street which had been unused for the last century, but bisected one of the parcels where the structure was to be built. Upon its grand opening, the center became the largest recreational facility of it’s like in Brooklyn, and the second largest complex in all of New York.
For the past fifteen years, property investor and developer Dmitry Druzhinsky has worked to revolutionize the Big Apple’s residential and recreational infrastructure. Brooklyn’s MatchPoint NYC, his latest project, is New York’s premier sports, health and fitness destination for residents and serious athletes of all ages. The 120,000 sq. ft. upscale complex provides comprehensive, modern facilities and a friendly staff of certified instructors, personal trainers, and nutritionists to ensure that members safely and effectively work towards their desired results.
Located on a three acre lot on Coney Island, MatchPointNYC boasts over 120,000 square feet of top of the line equipment and amenities, most notably an expansive nine court indoor tennis arena which is the largest of its kind in Brooklyn. Co-founded by Dmitry Druzhinsky in 2013, the luxury sports center filled a noticeable lack of recreational infrastructure in the region. As a result of his dedication to club members, the staff, and surrounding community, the complex has quickly evolved into the preferred venue for families, internationally renowned athletes, and beneficial charity events. “They are great to work with,” notes Darren Port, CEO of Powered by Professionals and part of the management behind this year’s tournament, “He has really gone out of his way to invite us to work with them, and that has helped make the event really special in the two years we have had it here. The foundation does a great job in keeping its expenses low to ensure that the money raised goes towards the cause, and MatchPoint’s generosity helps make that possible.”
Dmitry Druzhinsky notes that the R Baby Foundation is America’s sole nonprofit organization with the mission of saving infants’ lives through improving pediatric care, and to date, has raised over $8 million for hospital programs and saved more than one million lives. The charity’s tennis tournament was first created in 2010, under the direction of Jason Pinsky, “Six years ago I saw the foundation was doing a golf event, and I suggested we should do a tennis event. The first year was sort of a test and it went well, and the demand has been high ever since. We bring together a great group of competitive guys for a great cause.” In 2015 and 2016, the Foundation honorably raised more than $500,000 for childcare initiatives including telemedicine with pediatric professionals, mobile simulation training programs, and symposiums.
