Sports fans mingle with politicians, business owners, journalists, and celebrities to watch the fast-paced competition each year. Local athletes from Brooklyn and the Bronx have, since 2015, been smashing the ball to the wall in the Johnny Ray Memorial Pro Wall Ball Tournament at MatchPoint NYC. As noted by MatchPoint co-founder Dmitry Druzhinsky, an intense cross-town rivalry has been fostered by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. in order to engage inner-city and under-served youth in physical activity, and also to benefit the U.S. Wall Ball Association’s education, anti-violence and anti-obesity initiatives. The five year old tournament celebrates the life of Jonathan Ray, the late brother of the USWA CEO, who inspired the association. Dmitry is honored at the opportunity to welcome such organizations that promote a healthy lifestyle to complex.
Back in the 1930s, as noted by the U.S. Wall Ball Association, beach-bums hitting a worn tennis ball up against wooden jetties gave the New York Parks Department the idea to create community handball courts in city parks. Today, the game has professional players and is known as Wall Ball, played at athletic centers across the country. Dmitry Druzhinsky, co-founder of Brooklyn’s top-notch health and fitness complex MatchPoint NYC, was recently joined by area politicians for the Pro Wall Ball Tournament, an annual big competition – billed as the “Battle of the Boroughs” – that raises awareness of overall health and youth empowerment. The winning team took home the trophy along with a year of top reputation.
